Almoxarife - One more Arabic word to add to my list
As highschool students in Brazil, we learn from Portuguese grammar books and teachers that words with Arabic origins start with al-. So, words such as almofada (cushion) and alface (lettuce) are widely used as examples. I know all we need to do is to open a dictionary. But, it's very satisfying when we suspect and discover by ourselves the origin of a word. 😅
Well, almoxarife (warehouse keeper) is another Arabic-origin word that I have to add to my list.
According to Michaelis Dictionary:
ETIMOLOGIA
ár al-mušrif, como esp almojarife.
ár al-mušrif, como esp almojarife.
And according to Aulete dictionary:
[F.: Do ár. al-muxarif, 'nobre, honrado'; 'tesoureiro'.]
